vPress
Open a 7z, zip or rar, take out only what you want — or squeeze files into one archive, with a password if it matters.
The problem
Archive tools tend to be either free and cluttered with adverts and bundled toolbars, or paid per seat for something a business uses twice a week.
vPress is built around the 7-Zip engine, which is bundled with it. It reads what 7-Zip reads, nothing is installed alongside it, and nothing phones home.
What it does
1Browse the disk, then compress
vPress is a small file manager too. Walk to a folder, select what you want and press Add — no separate dialog to shuttle through first.
2Browse inside an archive
Folders behave like folders. Double-click a file and it opens: vPress unpacks just that one member to a temp folder.
3AES-256 passwords
And for .7z, the option to encrypt the file names too, so the listing itself gives nothing away.
4Split volumes
Cut a large archive into equal parts — 100m, 700m, 4g — for media that will not take the whole thing.
5Self-extracting archives
With 7-Zip installed you get a real .exe. Without it, vPress builds a self-extracting .bat that unpacks itself with PowerShell and needs nothing at the far end.
6Repair and salvage
7-Zip has no repair command, so vPress does the honest thing: it reads past the errors, saves everything that still decodes, and tells you exactly which members were lost. A damaged .rar goes to WinRAR’s real rebuild command when WinRAR is installed.
7Checksums
CRC32, CRC64, SHA-1 and SHA-256, with a box to paste a published hash into for a straight match or no-match answer.
8Explorer integration
File associations plus a cascading vPress › right-click menu — Add to archive, Compress to ZIP or 7z, and Extract here / to a new folder / Test on any archive.
Why it is worth it
Nothing is offered during install, because there is nothing to offer.
A salvaged archive comes with the list of what could not be recovered, rather than a cheerful "done".
Drop files from Explorer onto the window to compress them; drag one file out of an open archive to extract just that.
The right-click entries appear whether or not vPress owns the association, so an existing tool keeps working.
How you use it
Double-click it, or right-click › vPress › Extract here.
Select files in the left pane, press Add, choose 7z or zip, and a password if you need one.
Open the Checksums panel, paste the hash the publisher listed, and read the answer.
Open it and press Repair. What survives is written out and what did not is listed.
