vPDF
Read it, search it, mark it up, sign it, pull pages out of it — without a subscription and without uploading anything.
The problem
Editing a PDF usually means either a monthly subscription or a website that wants the document uploaded to somebody else’s server. For an invoice, a contract or a payroll sheet, the second is not a choice a business should have to make.
vPDF does the work on the PC. It is built on pdf.js for rendering and pdf-lib for anything that rewrites the file, and both are bundled.
What it does
1Read properly
Continuous scroll, fit-width and fit-page, 50–400%, rotate, a page box, and thumbnails and bookmarks in the sidebar. Light and dark.
2Real search
Across the whole document, with a match count, next and previous, match-case and whole-word, and every hit highlighted in place.
3Select and copy
A real text layer, not a picture of the page — so quoting a paragraph is a copy, not retyping.
4Forms and links work
AcroForm fields render, accept values and keep them.
5Mark up and sign
Highlight, draw freehand, add text boxes, stamp an image or a signature. Saving burns the marks into the PDF, so any reader shows them.
6Page tools
Rotate, delete, extract, merge several PDFs, split every N pages or one file per page. Ctrl or Shift-click thumbnails to build a selection.
7Get the content out
All the text to a .txt, any page range to PNG or JPEG at 96–600 dpi, or the images embedded in the file at their original resolution.
8Tabs or windows
Your choice for what happens when several PDFs arrive at once. The tab strip only appears once there are two.
Why it is worth it
The document never leaves the PC. For anything with a name, a number or a salary on it, that is the whole argument.
It is installed software. It keeps working whether or not anybody renews anything.
A highlight made in vPDF shows up in Acrobat, in a browser, and on paper — because it is written into the file, not stored beside it.
The same viewer replaces the plain PDF plugin in vTouch, so a PDF opened from a portal gets the full tool.
How you use it
Double-click a PDF, drag one onto the window, or use Open with › vPDF.
Pick highlight, draw or text from the toolbar. Right-click a mark to remove it. Save when you are done.
Ctrl-click the thumbnails you want, then Extract — they become a new PDF.
Export to text for searching, or to PNG or JPEG for a slide or a document.

One thing it cannot do, said plainly
vPDF opens encrypted PDFs and shows what a document permits, but it cannot add or remove an open password. The PDF encryption algorithms are not implemented by pdf-lib, and pdf.js decrypts only for display.
A tool that quietly wrote out an unencrypted copy while claiming to "remove the password" would be worse than one that says so. For that job, use qpdf or Acrobat.
